Why is a liberal called a liberal and why is a conservative called a conservative?

Answer:

Liberals want a "liberal" amount of government in their lives.
Conservatives want a "conservative" amount of government in their lives.

The more government in people's lives = less freedom individuals have.

  1. It seems the authors believe that the Democratic Party has claimed the environment issue as its own. And, by and large, I would agree with this. But aren't many issues typically associated with one party over the other? For example, isn't abortion primarily a hot-button issue for Republicans? Speaking of abortion, the authors appear to prize less government and more individual autonomy - as do most conservatives. Wouldn't it make sense, then, for conservatives to be pro-choice, thus empowering individuals to decide what is best for them and those around them - and without the government telling them they can or can't?

  2. No, conservatives would not be pro-choice. Conservatives want less gov't, but also want explicit constitutional rights protected - The Right to Life.

  3. I would agree with the second poster. The first poster defines more of a libertarian view. Most libertarians align themselves with the republican party but that doesn't necessarily fit with their own views. Libertarians theoretically should support abortion, euthanasia, and drugs.
