Health Care and Abortion

Republicans have made the claim that the health care bill currently in the House of Representatives (Bill HR 3200) will indeed provide federal funds for abortions. President Obama stated in his joint address to Congress that what republicans are saying about the health care bill is untrue. Let's take a closer look. First, Pres. Obama is correct; the bill itself does not allow for abortions to be federally funded. However, his semantics are completely misleading because an amendment was passed that does provide federal funds for abortions. The amendment is known as the Capps Amendment. Here are the allowances specifically stated in the amendment, " 3) Coverage under the public health insurance option - The public health insurance option shall provide coverage for services described in paragraph (4)(B).
(4) Abortion services -
(B) Abortions for which public funding is allowed - The services described in this subparagraph are abortions for which the expenditure of Federal funds appropriated for the Department of Health and Human Services is permitted, based on the law as in effect as of the date that is 6 months before the beginning of the plan year involved."

Looks like federal dollars will be spent on abortions after all.

This morning,Representative Stupak (D) from Maryland had a snippet on Fox News stating that if this bill comes to the floor with that language, some democrats will join with the republicans to stop the bill. That sounds like a fantastic idea. Here's the clip.



Federal funds, also known as OUR MONEY should not be going to support abortions. Americans are in the business of saving lives and promoting a better standard of living. The last thing we need is a government that wants(proven by the amendment) to spend our tax dollars on a naive 14 year old who wants to get rid of a human being so she isn't "punished with a baby," so famously stated by the one and only, President Obama.
